August, 2024- visited the famous Sky Islands in Southeastern Arizona during monsoon, with a group guided by Ken Blankenship. The overall species count was great, but the highlight of the trip was seeing 13 species of hummers (out of the total 18 or so found in the US) within a few days in a relatively small geographic area. This truly is the hummingbird capital of the US, like Magee marsh is for warblers. The other major highlight was seeing the Whiskered Screech Owl, the owl with the smallest range in the US.
In addition, we saw some cool mammals (2 species of bats, a raccoon, and the fastest mammal in the US, the Pronghorn), a black-tailed rattlesnake (which was just outside our guide's cabin at one of the lodges one evening), and a lot of really cool butterflies and bugs.
