I have been photographing birds since 2005. It started as an interest in identifying the many species that visited my backyard in Tennessee, and grew into a serious hobby. Now I seek birds wherever I travel, and have taken pictures of over 1200 species in the wild, across the US (including Hawaii), Mexico, Canada, Panama, Barbados, India, Nepal, Australia, England, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Denmark, and Kenya.
I live in beautiful San Francisco, which is a very birdy city, with over 300 species having been reported here (of which I have been lucky enough to see over 200).
On the next page are my life lists, divided into different regions as below (these do not strictly follow the ABA or AOU definitions). Common names are followed by the scientific name, with additional details if applicable such as alternate names, endemic and endangered status, etc. I have not used eBird for my life list, as I only recently started recording my trips on that site, usually with groups of other birders. Most of the species I have seen pre-date my eBird experience. This does make it somewhat challenging, as I have to be meticulous with updates after each trip or individual sightings.
1) North America (the continental US 49 and Canada)
2) Mexico and Central America (including the 7 countries between Mexico and Columbia)
3) West Indies (Caribbean)
4) South America (everything south of and including Columbia)
5) Europe
6) India (kept separate as I have done disproportionately more birding there)
7) Asia (rest of the continent)
8) Australia (will include New Zealand in this list whenever I visit)
9) Africa
10) Pacific Islands (including Hawaii)
11) Antarctica (hopefully will have that dream come true some day)
My equipment:
Cameras: Canon Rebel (for the first few years), 5D I (didn't use much for birds given the slow frame rate), 7D II (my main body for several years), and most recently R6 II with an adaptor for my 500 EF lens.
Lenses: Canon 100-400/f5.6 mm, 500/f4 II (my main lens since 2016).
Support: none (used to have a tripod and gimbal but was more of a hinderance than help).
Bins: Swarowski EL 10x42 (bought in 2007, and probably the best investment I have made in my birding pursuits).
I added an "updates" page some time back, to give more details on my birding trips/outings, with dates and highlights.
